This old fashioned Southern Banana Pudding recipe layers vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, homemade vanilla pudding, and piles of meringue!
Ingredients
- Granulated Sugar: 1 Cup
- All-Purpose Flour: 1/2 Cup
- Salt: 1/4 TSP
- Milk (Divided): 3 1/2 Cup
- Eggs (Separated): 8 Each
- Butter (Unsalted): 1 TBSP
- Vanilla Extract: 1 1/2 TSP
- Vanilla Wafers: 0 Lbs, 11 Oz
- Bananas (Sliced): 6 Each
- Cream Of Tartar: 1 TSP
- Granulated Sugar: 1 1/3 Cup
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, and 1/4 tsp of salt.
- Gradually stir in 3 cups of milk and cook over medium heat until thickened.
- In a separate bowl, beat 8 eggs and slowly add a small amount of the hot mixture to temper the eggs.
- Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook for an additional 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat and stir in 1 tbsp of butter and 1 tsp of vanilla extract.
- Let the pudding cool slightly.
- In a serving dish, layer vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and the homemade vanilla pudding.
- Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of pudding on top.
- In a mixing bowl, beat 8 egg whites with 1 tsp of cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add 1 cup of granulated sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
- Spread the meringue over the pudding, making sure to seal the edges.
- Bake at 350°F for 12-15 minutes or until the meringue is lightly browned.
- In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 1/2 cups of flour, and 1/4 tsp of salt.
- Gradually stir in 3 cups of milk and cook over medium heat until thickened.
- In a separate bowl, beat 8 eggs and gradually stir in a small amount of the hot mixture to temper the eggs.
- Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook for 2 more minutes, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat and stir in 1 tbsp of butter and 1 tsp of vanilla extract.
- Let the pudding cool slightly.
- Layer the bottom of a dish with vanilla wafers.
- Slice 6 bananas and layer them on top of the wafers.
- Pour the pudding over the bananas and wafers.
- In a bowl, beat 8 egg whites with 1 tsp of cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
- Gradually add 1 cup of granulated sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
- Spread the meringue over the pudding, sealing the edges.
- Bake at 350°F for 12-15 minutes or until the meringue is golden brown.
